Description: Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. Description: Xplanet was inspired by Xearth. It renders images on the desktop background.

All of the major planets and most satellites can be drawn, similar to a Solar System Simulator. A number of different map projections are also supported, including azimuthal, Mercator, Mollweide, orthographic and rectangular.

A bunch of useful scripts are separately available: to update your maps with the latest cloud images, satellite orbits, weather information, and recent volcanoes and earthquakes, and create images with different projections and viewpoints; to create marker files for earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and satellites, as well as the markerfiles themselves and a cloud map mirror.

  OpenUniverse 
Description: Simulates the Solar System's bodies in 3D. It does so in real time, meaning that you can view all the planets, moons and spaceships move along their paths, trace, follow, orbit and even control them (time and spaceship parameters control). Pretty realistic, it quite hardware intensive.

If you have a good graphical accelerator you may wish to download additional/optional planet textures featuring an even higher resolution.

You will need to have a few OpenGL libraries already present in you system (you probably have them without noticing it); otherwise you will need to separately install them.

This is the port for FreeBSD. There are also Windows and Linux versions available.

  Gnome Predict 
Description: Gpredict is a satellite tracking and prediction application written using Gtk+ and Gnome widgets.

Part of the grounstation suite, its purpose is to track the various amateur, weather and military satellites that are of interest to radio amateurs.

The groundstation suite comprises Gnome-rig and Gnome-predict and is intended to provide a low-cost amateur radio station with the facilities of a high-end satellite station.

The port for FreeBSD has just been released. It is also available for Linux.

  SpaceChart 
Description: SpaceChart is a program that allows you to see the stars in 3D and rotate them to see them from any point of view. You can also limit which stars you want to see, according to their spectral class and luminosity, and draw links between all stars closer than a certain distance.

Data available includes all stars in the Hipparcos catalogue within 60 parsecs (over 190 light years) of the Sun.

  XFITSview 
Description: With easy to o use graphical controls, will display astronomical images in the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format allowing zooming, scrolling, modifying the brightness, contrast and pseudo color and allow determination of celestial positions and the physical brightness units in the image. Both standard World Coordinate System (WCS) and Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) coordinates are supported. Positions and brightnesses of selected pixels may be logged to a text file and specified positions in the image may be marked.

Images may be compared by "blinking" them and 3 dimensional images may be viewed a plane at a time or in the form of a movie. Blanked pixels and all defined FITS image data types are supported. Normal or gzip compressed files may be used. The programs contain extensive online documentation and are suitable for use as external FITS image viewers for Web browsers. These viewers are distributed by the (USA) National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) free of charge.

The FITSview family of viewers for FITS format astronomical images are available for Microsoft Windows (FITSview), Apple Macintosh (MacFITSview) and Unix/X-Windows (XFITSview) computer systems.
