TSOL - The Simple Observing Log
Description: The Simple Observing Log (TSOL) is intended as a place where you can keep track of all your star-gazing information.

You may fill out forms for all the objects you intend to view in a session, then use the forms to keep track of your sucess, or you may observe as you always have, and record your observations during or after your session. After you're done, you can view and print your observing records sorted by date or by object.

There's even a space where you can sketch your observations on the page, or place scans of your sketches after you're done. An "astrophoto" section for each observation lets astrophotographers keep track of their exposures as well.

When you want to use TSOL in the field, simply choose "Nightvision Mode" to switch to a vision-saving red display!

Windows and Palm OS versions are also available.

  Celestia
Description: Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.

This is the Mac version. Add-ons, Linux, FreeBSD and Windows versions are also available.

  IRAF
Description: IRAF is the "Image Reduction and Analysis Facility". The main IRAF distribution includes a good selection of programs for general image processing and graphics, plus a large number of programs for the reduction and analysis of optical and IR astronomy data (the "noao" packages). Other external or layered packages are available for applications such as data acquisition or handling data from other observatories and wavelength regimes such as the Hubble Space Telescope (optical), EUVE (extreme ultra-violet), or ROSAT and AXAF or Chandra (X-ray). These external packages are distributed separately from the main IRAF distribution but can be easily installed. The IRAF system also includes a complete programming environment for scientific applications, which includes a programmable Command Language scripting facility, the IMFORT Fortran/C programming interface, and the full SPP/VOS programming environment in which the portable IRAF system and all applications are written.

This is the Mac version.

Constellations are drawn in their traditional form, and a table lists the visible objects. Win/MacAstronomica also features an Orrery that simulates the solar system, a sundial/moon dial, and a lot more. The interface is very elegant and easy to use. And finally, WinAstronomica lets you print customized sky maps.

Requires: Mac OS X 10.2 or later

MacAstronomica 2.0.1 for Classic Mac OS and WinAstronomica for Windows are also available.

  Best Pair II
Description: Best Pair II is a port of Jim Burrows' BestPair DOS program. It is designed to select the "best" pair of alignment stars for performing a 2-star alignment of a Meade LX200 telescope (or any Meade telescope that uses the AutoStar computer controller) in Alt-Azimuth mode. The application looks at the pointing errors involved with performing an alignment with each pair of Meade's choice of 33 stars (or 78 in the case of AutoStar), examining only those that will be visible at the place and time specified. The pair of stars chosen is that with the smallest error.

This the MacOSX version. A classic Mac and Windows versions are also available.

  MacFITSview
Description: With easy to o use graphical controls, will display astronomical images in the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format allowing zooming, scrolling, modifying the brightness, contrast and pseudo color and allow determination of celestial positions and the physical brightness units in the image. Both standard World Coordinate System (WCS) and Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) coordinates are supported. Positions and brightnesses of selected pixels may be logged to a text file and specified positions in the image may be marked.

Images may be compared by "blinking" them and 3 dimensional images may be viewed a plane at a time or in the form of a movie. Blanked pixels and all defined FITS image data types are supported. Normal or gzip compressed files may be used. The programs contain extensive online documentation and are suitable for use as external FITS image viewers for Web browsers. These viewers are distributed by the (USA) National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) free of charge.

The FITSview family of viewers for FITS format astronomical images are available for Microsoft Windows (FITSview), Apple Macintosh (MacFITSview) and Unix/X-Windows (XFITSview) computer systems.

This is the Mac version ( runs under Apple Macintosh System 7.0 and later).
