  AstroGrav (Mac)
Description: Software that allows you to study how astronomical objects move and interact under the force of gravity. It features interactive 3D graphics which allow you to move around within an astronomical system that you are viewing, while watching how it evolves with the passage of time.

A wide variety of sample files are provided, including Solar System, space mission, and abstract systems, and these enable you to experiment with AstroGrav without having to go to the trouble of entering your own data. The comprehensive editing facilities allow you to either create your own astronomical systems, or to modify existing ones, and provide you with an almost endless scope for experimentation and investigation.

AstroGrav can be used to visualize and understand the following aspects of gravitational and astronomical systems:

  • Basic concepts of mass, position, velocity, acceleration, force, momentum, and energy.
  • Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion and Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation.
  • Many body systems and the n-body problem.
  • Orbits and Lagrange points.
  • Interchange of potential energy and kinetic energy in gravitational systems.
  • Projectiles and escape velocities.
  • Gravitational slingshots used in space missions.

Available for both Mac and Windows, comes complete with a tutorial and full documentation. You can download a fully functional 15 day trial version for evaluation.

  Best Pair II
Description: Best Pair II is a port of Jim Burrows' BestPair DOS program. It is designed to select the "best" pair of alignment stars for performing a 2-star alignment of a Meade LX200 telescope (or any Meade telescope that uses the AutoStar computer controller) in Alt-Azimuth mode. The application looks at the pointing errors involved with performing an alignment with each pair of Meade's choice of 33 stars (or 78 in the case of AutoStar), examining only those that will be visible at the place and time specified. The pair of stars chosen is that with the smallest error.

This the MacOSX version. A classic Mac and Windows versions are also available.

  Celestia
Description: Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.

This is the Mac version. Add-ons, Linux, FreeBSD and Windows versions are also available.

  Color Mechanic (for Mac)
Description: A selective color correction plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and compatible programs. What makes Color Mechanic so powerful is that it lets you change one or more colors in an image without changing any other colors in the image and without the painstaking work of selecting the parts of the image you want to change . This type of selective color correction is both easier to use and more powerful than conventional color balancing or filtration techniques that simply apply a uniform correction to the entire image or give you a few sliders to adjust.
