  Aladin  Popular
Description: Aladin is an interactive software sky atlas allowing the user to visualize digitized images of any part of the sky, to superimpose entries from astronomical catalogs or personal user data files, and to interactively access related data and information from the SIMBAD, NED, VizieR, or other archives for all known objects in the field.

Aladin is particularly useful for multi-spectral cross-identifications of astronomical sources, observation preparation and quality control of new data sets (by comparison with standard catalogues covering the same region of sky).

The Aladin interactive atlas is available in three modes: a simple previewer, a Java applet interface and a Java Standalone interface.

  IridiumFlares  Popular
Description: IridiumFlares is an application that predicts the flares produced by the constellation of communication satellites known as Iridium. A flare can be observed when a light source (such as the Sun or the Moon) is reflected by one of the satellite’s antennas. A flare is a very bright phenomenon (the brighter have a magnitude of -8.4) that can easily be observed if the date and location in the sky are known. This phenomenon generally occurs at least once a day, the morning before sun set or the evening after dawn. Some flares can be visible during the day. The duration of a flare is approximately from 3 to 8 seconds, therefore an application that predicts the exact date is required to have a maximum chance to correctly observe the phenomenon.

IridiumFlares has been written in the portable language Java (version 1.4). It requires a Java virtual machine (>= 1.4) and the Java3d package.

Note: You are advised to choose the «Java Web Start installer».

  Zaurus Sky Explorer
Description: Zaurus Sky Explorer is a freeware planetarium in pocket size for all Java enabled devices. This program proves that that it IS possible

The Name "Zaurus" relates to the Sharp Zaurus hanheld device for which it was originally designed. In the mean time it is now also available as Java-Application, Applet and web application .

  Orbit Visualization Tool (OVT)
Description: Java based software designed for interactive 3D visualization of satellite orbits in the terrestrial magnetosphere.

The new version has the following functionality:

  • Platform independent: It can be installed on any Windows based machine (Win98, NT), or under a Unix system (FreeBSD, Solaris, Linux).
  • Modern computer graphics based on OpenGL, Java, VTK - nonproprietary graphics packages with interactive, mouse-maneuverable 3D graphics capabilities.
  • Viewing of 3D magnetosphere, bow shock, magnetopause with surface rendering, satellite orbits, satellite footprints.
  • Satellite tracks include CLUSTER and any other spacecraft which may be of interest for scientific studies. Cluster viewing includes zoom option to view the spatial configuration of the four spacecraft.
  • A number of most recent magnetospheric models is implemented and used to compute footprints of the satellite projected both on the Earth surface and on the distant magnetosphere (or the equatorial plane).
  • Under development: Optional Internet (WWW) access to OVT2 which would return a set of pictures showing the position of the spacecraft in the magnetosphere and their configuration in space.
