This is a good beginner package to get you started in learning your way around the sky. The interface is easy to use but somewhat cluttered (i.e. buttons and icons take an awful lot of real estate). Would like to see better graphics, particularly when displaying symbols for deep sky objects. As previously mentioned, magnitude limits prevent this from being a serious planning tool for deep sky observing.

Very nice. I found this tool immediately useful (and that implies, easy/painless to install) and just right for setting up a quick plan for an evening's observing. The interface is intuitive (definitely a plus) and the graphics nice. The app itself runs quickly, even on a less-than-state-of-the-art machine. Limitations: 6.5 mag. limit. This won't be suitable for deep sky planning. Also, I couldn't find any kind of installation or nubie user's guide, generally a must for linux users (It took me 5 minutes to figure out that the name was xp*L*ns, not xpins - my monitor and eyesight and default font are all marginal, and I had to guess that, like usual, that the first time use was from the command line. A quick install guide that points out the defaut install directory would have been useful, if only so that I could create a link to the desktop. Sigh - fortunately, I know how to use 'find' sufficiently well...)

This is a very nice littlee program. However it 's usefullness is somewhat limited by a magnitude 6.5 limit. I would like to see support for the Tycho II catalog with aa magnatude limit of mag. 12.0
