  HEALPix
Description: HEALPix is an acronym for Hierarchical Equal Area isoLatitude Pixelisation of the sphere. The original motivation for devising HEALPix was one of necessity. Satellite missions to measure the CMB anisotropy will produce multifrequency data sets sufficient for the construction of full-sky maps of the microwave sky at an angular resolution of a few arcminutes. The principal requirements in construction of HEALPix were to create a mathematical structure which supports a suitable discretisation of functions on a sphere at sufficiently high resolution, and to facilitate fast and accurate statistical and astrophysical analysis of massive full-sky data sets.

Features include:

  • Programs for fast simulation and analysis of full-sky maps of CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropy up to sub-arcminute angular resolution (your computer's RAM permitting).
  • Routines to read and write the FITS formatted map data sets, and allowing the IDL-based display of your results.
  • Programs to search the maps for pixel neighbours and extrema of a random field.
  • Automated installation and build scripts.
  • Improved Fortan 90 programming standard.
  • Optimised P_lm recursion for better performance (about 20 percent faster).
  • Radek Stompor's P_lm recursion accurate for computations up to l = 10000.
  • A constrained realisation facility.
  • Improved IDL display and file handling routines.
  • An IDL toolkit for pixel manipulation and FITS file manipulation.
  • A Fortran90 MAP2GIF visualisation facility.
  • Improved documentation.

  Solex
Description: The name comes from ?SOLar system integration by a fast EXtrapolation method?, and, indeed, SOLEX computes the positions of solar system bodies (planets, asteroids and comets) by a method which is entirely based on the numerical integration of the Newton equation of motion.

Two celestial mechanics programs based on numerical integration are contained in the download package, which are both very friendly and easy to use. Solex v 8.5 computes high precision ephemerides and osculating elements over the time span -5000 +5000, closely matching the JPL DE406 ephemerides, but the integration can reliably be extended to a range 10-100 times wider. Libraries of asteroids (up to 64K bodies), comets and stars (up to 1M stars) are included. Data can also be read from custom files containing either positions and velocities or osculating elements, so that new bodies (including Earth's satellites) can easily be handled. Up to 4000 bodies can be simultaneouly loaded, and an automated search for close approaches, eclipses or occultations can be made. Text (screen or file) and graphic output are switchable, making the program a flexible interactive planetarium and N-body orbit simulator. Realistic sky views can be displayed both statically and dynamically, virtually from any place in the solar system and pointing to any fixed direction or to any moving object. The program is at the same time simple to use and powerful in its performances. It can just give aesthetic pleasure and help to identify sky objects, or it can be used by an experienced researcher to investigate aspects of the solar system dynamics such as long-term change of orbital elements, impact probabilities and chaotic motion. FindOrb v5.3 is a program for orbit determination. The program inputs observational data of a solar system body or an Earth's satellite and outputs the best fitting starting positions and velocities (and classical orbital elements). Non-gravitational parameters for comets (Ai coefficients) or satellites (drag coefficient) can also be optimized. The computed starting vectors can be propagated to any other epoch and can be imported by Solex v8.5.
Both programs are suitable for amatorial as well as for professional use. Extended documentation is given as RTF files."

  Moovastar, Resolution and others...
Description: Using the Bright Star Catalogue (down to mag. 6.5) and the proper motion of the stars Moovastar simulates star positions in the future and past. You can choose a region of the sky, set the limiting magnitude and set a time sequence (time step, number of steps, and step interval). If the program doesn't run you probably need to install some Visual Basic 6 support files (1043 KB) on your computer.

Resolution calculates the focal plane image diameter of an object given its angular size in arcseconds and the focal length of the telescope. Resolution can also calculate either arcseconds, distance or separation given two out of three parameters.

Others programs offered by the same author include: Aview, Jupsat screensaver, Deep sky and Double star database (check the homepage).

  Visual Spec
Description: Visual Spec is a software designed for amateurs to process spectral images. It provides a set of functions dedicated to Spectral analysis and allows the amateur to extract scientific measurements from spectral images.

Features:

  • Calibration and correction functions. Wavelenght calibration is used to allow spectra comparison and lines identification with better accuracy. It is the basic spectral processings which enable most of the spectral measurements and functions.
  • Spectral lines identification toolbox. Visual Spec includes several library which help for line identifaction or spectral type comparison.
  • Multiples formats for data exportation. Once analysis is done, results can be exported in different file format: text file, graphic image in .bmp format, list in X,Y colums like the .dat format.
Spectroscopy is a technic which brings you up above the traditional imaging technic. Once the spectrum has been acquired, you may ask yourself: what can I do then ? Visual Spec will assist you in every step, with adequate tools, user-friendly functions and database with more than 5000 atomic lines referenced and a library of about 130 different spectral types...

  Conversiones
Description: This software does three sorts of calculations:
  • Conversion between degrees and hours, sexagesimal and decimal.
  • Equivalence between measures of distance, including astronomical scales (Astronomical Unit, Light Year and Parsec).
  • Conversion amidst Kelvin, Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature measuring scales. Considering humidity values you can also calculate the condensation point.

Easy Light - Save the Sky
Description: Useful tool in the fight against light pollution! Now you can explain with detailed, circumstantiated and alternative plans what your local authorities are doing wrong.

Save the Sky is a light design software aimed to beginner and experts alike. Its purpose is to optimize the design of road lighting. It can, in the respect of security technical norm and rules:
- Optimize the interdistance (distance between poles/pole height) of fixtures;
- Minimize the installed power per street length,
- Minimize the minimum maintained luminance;
- choose the better fixtures and make the most of them;v - Last but not least lower the direct and indirect light flux aimed at the sky (as requested by the most effective laws against light pollution like that of the Italian region Lombardy).
Achieving these goals allow us to light roads respecting the night sky and its cultural heritage of incalculable value for us and future generations.
Usually in other light design software, the designer chooses the street and installation parameters, then he compares if the processed results meets the technical rules. The design is done.
This software, chosen the street dimensions and the values imposed by the rules, optimize the calculus variables (like pole heigh, distance, tilt and so on) in order to produce the best configuration needed.
