Encyclopaedia Galactica | | Description: | A star charting and graphical ephemeris program. Three features particularly caught our attention: a nice looking Jovian satellites ephemeris graphic; the ability to produce for a chosen object a visibility graph for any given period of time; and the ability to associate images and text files to celestial objects, allowing the user to create a customized database.
Other features included are: an editable observing list; a Moon explorer tool which describes craters and points their location on a picture; a solar system orrey; a Moon phase and position table calculator for a chosen range of time; and a Jovian system simulator.
The main distribution file features deep sky objects and stars down to mag. 8 - but the complete PPM star catalogue is also available for use with the program. | | | Version: | 3 | | Filesize: | 2.48 MB | | Added on: | 03-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 957 | | Rating: | 2.0 (1 Vote) | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
Planisphere | | Description: | A program which exports to .PDF and lets you print a planisphere (a couple of sheets of paper very easy to assemble) appropriate for you latitude. The constellation lines are editable with an additional Constellation Editor.
You know you can buy a planisphere at most bookstores, but if you want a planisphere for another latitude, it can be problem. This program solves this. You can set latitude in a wide range (25-80° North or South) and display appropriate sky area on monitor, but, of course, also print it out. If, for instance, you are from north or central Europe and plan to spend holidays in southern Europe, with a planisphere you can recognize constelations, which aren't available at your higher latitude. If you have appropriate tools (like Adobe Illustrator), you can easy edit PDF output too.
Planispheres are a must for people starting to familiarize with the night sky as well.
Although the program is freeware, if you like it, you can support its next development by sending some money via MoneyBookers (check the homepage for the details). Please give this idea some serious consideration!
Note: The screenshot (as always, click to see it enlarged) shows the plans reduced in size. Also, colours can be inverted so you will save ink and have a white background with black stars, constellations and indications... | | | Version: | 2.0 | | Filesize: | 1.91 MB | | Added on: | 28-Apr-2004 | | Downloads: | 871 | | Rating: | 1.8 (2 Votes) | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (1)
ORSA (Windows) | | Description: | Orbit Reconstruction, Simulation and Analysis (ORSA) is a framework for Celestial mechanics computations. Asteriods, comets, solar and extra-solar planetary systems can be accurately reproduced, simulated and analyzed.
This is the Windows version; Linux, MacOSX and sourceTarball also available for download.

The Making of The Second Guide Star Catalog | | Description: | CD-ROM, available for download. This is a project that attempts to explains the substance, uses and complex methods adopted to produce the GSC-II catalog via a multimedia interactive interface. The content ranges from pretty pictures, through simple graphical descriptions to complex professional articles. It is aimed at a technically sophisticated level though does not require previous knowledge of Astronomy.

Fireball | | Description: | Fireball is free software to calculate the atmospheric trajectory and heliocentric orbit of meteoroids. The trajectory is presumed linear and the Earth spherical.
In order to calculate atmospheric trajectory and orbit of meteoroids, Fireball needs:
1- Data and hour (Universal Time) of the observed fireball
2- Geographical location of two observer that observed the same fireball
3- Equatorial coordinates of two trajectory points from observer number 1
4- Equatorial coordinates of two trajectory points (not the same of observer 1) from observer number 2
5- Duration of the fireball from the two observers
Press the button <Trajectory> to calculate atmospheric trajectory. The file "Trajectory.txt", with all the data, will be written in the Fireball folder. The most important data are written also at the bottom of the window dialog.
Check the resulting mean velocity value. If you want an orbit for this velocity value press the button <Orbit> otherwise put a new value and press. The file "Orbit.txt" with all the data will be written in the Fireball folder.
Correction applied to atmospheric velocity to obtain eliocentric value:
- Earth's rotation
- Diurnal aberration
- Terrestrial gravitation
- Earth's orbital motion
No correction for atmospheric deceleration. | | | Version: | 1 | | Filesize: | 148.00 Kb | | Added on: | 06-Jan-2005 | | Downloads: | 556 | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
