- Conversion between degrees and hours, sexagesimal and decimal.
- Equivalence between measures of distance, including astronomical scales (Astronomical Unit, Light Year and Parsec).
- Conversion amidst Kelvin, Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature measuring scales. Considering humidity values you can also calculate the condensation point.

CooReader2 | | Description: | A program to move your data from Brno maps to a file. Runs on Windows 95/98.
Lets you write down the trajectory, magnitude, speed and number of observed meteors; date and hour of the event; stream to which it belongs; observer's name and place of observation. The point is to later extract this info to a database.
Complements the program "Gnomon" (Gnomonic Atlas), also is available in AstroTips. | | | Filesize: | 2.48 MB | | Added on: | 16-Sep-2004 | | Downloads: | 458 | | Rating: | 8.0 (1 Vote) | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (1)
DarkAdapted | | Description: | DarkAdapted is a gamma control application program. It modifies your screen gamma settings so that you may, for example, preserve your dark adaptation (night vision) while using your computer.
Main features include: customizable gamma presets - you can create and save your own; high-resolution sliders allow you to adjust red, green, and blue video components individually and in real time; "Bailout" assignable shortcut keys offer a quick return to full brightness.

DarkSky | | Description: | A Windows 3.1 program which installs and runs fine under Windows 98.
Designed around Release 9.0 of The Arizona Database of deep-sky objects, contains data and information on over 61,100 deep sky object.
This older deep sky planner, which also produces charts and lets you log notes, is an overlooked piece of astro software. More advanced than DOS programs like NGP v2.7, this is less evolved than DeepSky 2000, NGCview, etc... | | | Version: | 1.0 | | Filesize: | 12.40 MB | | Added on: | 03-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 536 | | Rating: | 1.0 (1 Vote) | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (1)
Easy Light - Save the Sky | | Description: | Useful tool in the fight against light pollution! Now you can explain with detailed, circumstantiated and alternative plans what your local authorities are doing wrong.
Save the Sky is a light design software aimed to beginner and experts alike. Its purpose is to optimize the design of road lighting. It can, in the respect of security technical norm and rules:
- Optimize the interdistance (distance between poles/pole height) of fixtures;
- Minimize the installed power per street length,
- Minimize the minimum maintained luminance;
- choose the better fixtures and make the most of them;v
- Last but not least lower the direct and indirect light flux aimed at the sky (as requested by the most effective laws against light pollution like that of the Italian region Lombardy).
Achieving these goals allow us to light roads respecting the night sky and its cultural heritage of incalculable value for us and future generations.
Usually in other light design software, the designer chooses the street and installation parameters, then he compares if the processed results meets the technical rules. The design is done.
This software, chosen the street dimensions and the values imposed by the rules, optimize the calculus variables (like pole heigh, distance, tilt and so on) in order to produce the best configuration needed. | | | Version: | 3.0 | | Filesize: | 15.26 MB | | Added on: | 09-Dec-2004 | | Downloads: | 426 | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
Encyclopaedia Galactica | | Description: | A star charting and graphical ephemeris program. Three features particularly caught our attention: a nice looking Jovian satellites ephemeris graphic; the ability to produce for a chosen object a visibility graph for any given period of time; and the ability to associate images and text files to celestial objects, allowing the user to create a customized database.
Other features included are: an editable observing list; a Moon explorer tool which describes craters and points their location on a picture; a solar system orrey; a Moon phase and position table calculator for a chosen range of time; and a Jovian system simulator.
The main distribution file features deep sky objects and stars down to mag. 8 - but the complete PPM star catalogue is also available for use with the program. | | | Version: | 3 | | Filesize: | 2.48 MB | | Added on: | 03-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 951 | | Rating: | 2.0 (1 Vote) | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
Fireball | | Description: | Fireball is free software to calculate the atmospheric trajectory and heliocentric orbit of meteoroids. The trajectory is presumed linear and the Earth spherical.
In order to calculate atmospheric trajectory and orbit of meteoroids, Fireball needs:
1- Data and hour (Universal Time) of the observed fireball
2- Geographical location of two observer that observed the same fireball
3- Equatorial coordinates of two trajectory points from observer number 1
4- Equatorial coordinates of two trajectory points (not the same of observer 1) from observer number 2
5- Duration of the fireball from the two observers
Press the button <Trajectory> to calculate atmospheric trajectory. The file "Trajectory.txt", with all the data, will be written in the Fireball folder. The most important data are written also at the bottom of the window dialog.
Check the resulting mean velocity value. If you want an orbit for this velocity value press the button <Orbit> otherwise put a new value and press. The file "Orbit.txt" with all the data will be written in the Fireball folder.
Correction applied to atmospheric velocity to obtain eliocentric value:
- Earth's rotation
- Diurnal aberration
- Terrestrial gravitation
- Earth's orbital motion
No correction for atmospheric deceleration. | | | Version: | 1 | | Filesize: | 148.00 Kb | | Added on: | 06-Jan-2005 | | Downloads: | 546 | | Category: | Windows / Miscellaneous | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
HEALPix | | Description: | HEALPix is an acronym for Hierarchical Equal Area isoLatitude Pixelisation of the sphere. The original motivation for devising HEALPix was one of necessity. Satellite missions to measure the CMB anisotropy will produce multifrequency data sets sufficient for the construction of full-sky maps of the microwave sky at an angular resolution of a few arcminutes. The principal requirements in construction of HEALPix were to create a mathematical structure which supports a suitable discretisation of functions on a sphere at sufficiently high resolution, and to facilitate fast and accurate statistical and astrophysical analysis of massive full-sky data sets.
Features include:
- Programs for fast simulation and analysis of full-sky maps of CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropy up to sub-arcminute angular resolution (your computer's RAM permitting).
- Routines to read and write the FITS formatted map data sets, and allowing the IDL-based display of your results.
- Programs to search the maps for pixel neighbours and extrema of a random field.
- Automated installation and build scripts.
- Improved Fortan 90 programming standard.
- Optimised P_lm recursion for better performance (about 20 percent faster).
- Radek Stompor's P_lm recursion accurate for computations up to l = 10000.
- A constrained realisation facility.
- Improved IDL display and file handling routines.
- An IDL toolkit for pixel manipulation and FITS file manipulation.
- A Fortran90 MAP2GIF visualisation facility.
- Improved documentation.
