Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.
This is the Windows version. Add-ons, Mac OS X, FreeBSD and Linux versions are also available. | | | Version: | 1.3.2 | | Filesize: | 10.95 MB | | Added on: | 01-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 3617 | | Rating: | 8.9 (25 Votes) | | Category: | Windows / 3D Simulation | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (9)
Orbiter | | Description: | «ORBITER is a realistic space simulation using proper physics for the modelling of planetary motion, gravitational fields, free space and atmospheric flight etc. As such, it is more challenging to master than an arcade game - you should at least have some basic idea about mechanics and planetary motion to get the most from it.
You can land your ship at a space port on a planet surface, or dock to an orbital station; High resolution planetary maps provide some nice visual effects; Configurable environment. Users can add planets, space ships and space stations to the existing universe, or design a completely new solar system from scratch.»
The two minimum installation files will include the «Base» and «Textures» packages. Additional Earth, Moon, Mars etc... texture files and patches are also available. | | | Version: | 050126 | | Filesize: | 5.82 MB | | Added on: | 01-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 1945 | | Rating: | 8.9 (41 Votes) | | Category: | Windows / 3D Simulation | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (2)
Mars Explorer, Mars3D, Venus3D & Earth 3D | | Description: | Mars Explorer allows you to fly at thousands of km/h or drive at 50km/h over an accurately rendered Martian landscape covering an area of 1000kmx1000km. The surface is drawn to scale using altimetry data from NASA's MGS satellite. The program is available in two versions: with the Labyrinthus Noctis map (LN) & with the Melas Chasma map (MC)
Mars3D, another program by the same author, renders the whole surface of Mars in three dimensions using data collected by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor satellite. The data gives a maximum horizontal spatial resolution of 13 Km. The vertical accuracy is to within 5 m. Real time visualization of the red planet is allowed. The user has full control of the colours and amount of detail used to draw the surface. Zoom in an out features are implemented. As of the release of version 3, Mars3D is now split in several files (program, datasets and textures). Visit the homepage for details.
Venus3D does the same, using data from Magellan satellite, with a detail of 20 Km, for Venus.
Earth 3D is also available. The name is self explanatory.
They will run better on a fast machine loaded with lots of memory and a graphical accelerator. Highly entertaining. | | | Version: | various | | Filesize: | 21.93 MB | | Added on: | 01-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 1413 | | Rating: | 8.0 (1 Vote) | | Category: | Windows / 3D Simulation | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (1)
Sky3D | | Description: | This program aims to take you in a 3D tour of our galactic neighborhood. The user sets its own way, simultaneously being presented with information on the features of the stars he is observing.

Partiview | | Description: | «Partiview (Particle View) is a program that visualizes and animates three dimensional particle data. Within Partiview, you have the ability to navigate through 3-D data, as if you're "flying." Partiview is not limited to particle data; it can display 2-D images as well as multiple 2-D polygons that can be built into 3-D surfaces. It cannot record flight paths, though it can play them.
You can learn more about Partiview and how to visualize your own data in the manual. In addition, visit the Digital Universe site to download the Milky Way Atlas and other data sets as they become available.» | | | Version: | n.a. | | Filesize: | 410.16 Kb | | Added on: | 01-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 558 | | Category: | Windows / 3D Simulation | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
GrandTour | | Description: | GRANDTOUR can simulate space as
seen from the Voyager and Giotto spacecraft. In addition, GRANDTOUR can
generate scenes from arbitrary points in space or the Earth, with the
spacecraft visible to the observer. The planet, moons, and rings of
interest (or comet, nucleus, and tail), stars, the sun, and the
spacecraft are all accurately drawn with wireframe representations.
Hidden line removal is done for the body surfaces. The motions of the
bodies themselves are highly accurate, with errors no greater than 500
kilometers. The user has considerable control over the time step, field of
view, etc., and many frames per second are typically generated.
The program was originally developed at the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory by John D. Callahan to assist in the analysis of science and optical navigation
data. In addition, the program was filmed by the BBC as part of a NOVA
documentary on the Voyager Uranus encounter, and by the Four Point
Entertainment Company for a commercially available video on Halley''s
Comet. Program conveniently runs from any Windows/DOS.

Planet Engine | | Description: | Planet Engine is a 3D real-time planet renderer. It allows you to fly over the surface of planets and also to see them from space.
You can explore real planets - like Mars and Earth - or use imaginary data.
You'd better have a good graphical accelerator with OpenGL support. | | | Version: | 0.705 | | Filesize: | 7.52 MB | | Added on: | 07-Aug-2003 | | Downloads: | 3588 | | Rating: | 6.5 (6 Votes) | | Category: | Windows / 3D Simulation | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details | Comments (1)
AstroFly | | Description: | The main purpose is to present the three-dimensional models of our neighborhood in our own Milky Way Galaxy on a personal computer. The 3D models are based on the remarkable Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues, which are the products of the European Space Agency's Hipparcos Space Astrometry Mission.
Features include: you can fly anywhere in space; each star is depicted with its "real" color; you can filter stars by many parameters; simplified Wireframe of our Milky Way Galaxy is available; you can check a star in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram; finding a famous star by its names is available; you can study constellations.»
The present version of AstroFly consists of two packages:
. The first package (mandatory - click the title above) - AstroFly 3.0 Basic Package (6.9 MB) - installs AstroFly' executables and the star database derived from the Hipparcos Catalogue.
. The second package (optional) - AstroFly 3.0 Plus Package (19.6 MB) - installs only the star database derived from the Tycho Catalogue.

Lunar Globe, the Virtual Museum of Lunar Vehicles | | Description: | Lets you interactively survey the lunar sphere, lunar formations and other objects without an astronomical telescope. "Interactively" means you can select objects to survey, control position of a virtual point of view and field of vision. You may explore the interactive map of lunar craters, with help of a Lunar Globe's dynamical interface.
On the one hand, some historical data is collected here, which can be a reference information. On the other hand, Lunar GLobe gives the possibility to have a 3D look at some Terrestrial spacecrafts, launched towards the Moon and reached a successful soft landing. These spacecrafts have been standing on the lunar ground since the end of Lunar Race.
Such possibility is certainly much limited, and does not give a real picture of authentic validity - because it is founded solely on computer imitations - even on imitations of real lunar vehicles. | | | Version: | 1.107 | | Filesize: | 1.36 MB | | Added on: | 02-Sep-2003 | | Downloads: | 703 | | Category: | Windows / 3D Simulation | | Homepage | Rate resource | Details
